Karnataka By-Election: Independent Candidate Withdraws Nomination, CM Siddaramaiah Confident of Victory

Bengaluru, March 27: Sadiq, who had filed his nomination as an independent candidate for the by-election in Davanagere, has withdrawn his nomination. Following this, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed confidence in winning the by-elections in both Davanagere and Bagalkot.

During a press conference at the Congress office, CM Siddaramaiah stated on Friday that he believes the party will secure victories in both constituencies.

Sadiq had contested as an independent candidate for the Davanagere South seat, opposing the candidacy of Samarth Mallikarjun, the grandson of the late Congress leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa.

Samarth Mallikarjun’s father, S.S. Mallikarjun, serves as the Minister for Mining, Geology, and Horticulture, while his mother, Prabha Mallikarjun, is a Member of Parliament for the Davanagere constituency.

CM Siddaramaiah mentioned that he has known Sadiq for many years, having met him at wrestling events in Mysuru. He emphasized that there is nothing wrong with aspiring to be a candidate. He also noted that 11 candidates withdrew their nominations the previous day. Thanking Sadiq, he said that he stepped back from the election at the party’s request.

Legislator Rizwan Arshad, Legislative Council Chief Whip Saleem Ahmed, and the Chief Minister’s political secretary Nazir Ahmed visited Davanagere. However, they could not prevent the late filing of nominations due to their delayed arrival. The Chief Minister mentioned that he could not attend in person as he had to respond in the Legislative Council.

Siddaramaiah highlighted that Sadiq has been with the Congress for nearly 40 years and is a loyal and dedicated worker. There are approximately 70,000 Muslim voters in Davanagere. Following discussions, the high command decided to grant the ticket to Samarth, in line with the party’s tradition of honoring the families of deceased leaders.

Speaking to the media in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and All India Congress Committee General Secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala, Sadiq announced his withdrawal from the Davanagere South Assembly seat. He pledged to work hard to ensure the Congress party’s victory, stating that people from all communities would vote for the Congress candidate, sending them to the assembly.

He affirmed his allegiance to the Congress party, stating he would ensure their success and that the Bharatiya Janata Party should not benefit or win. After discussions with the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister, he agreed to withdraw.
