
Guiyang, June 21: In a remarkable display of skill, Jyoti clinched the only gold medal for India at the World Boxing Cup held on Sunday. Competing in the 48-kilogram category final, she decisively defeated Brazil’s reigning gold medalist, Farzona Fojilova from Uzbekistan, with a unanimous score of 5-0.
Jyoti’s impressive victory against a formidable opponent not only marked a memorable chapter in her career but also highlighted her growing recognition on the international stage.
India showcased a strong performance in the finals, securing three silver medals as well. In the 51-kilogram category, Meenakshi had to settle for silver after losing 0-5 to China’s Wu Yu.
Prachi also earned a silver medal in the 57-kilogram category, despite a tough match against Uzbekistan’s Nigina Ukhtamova, where she lost 0-5.
In the men’s category, Deepak (70 kilograms) secured a silver medal after being defeated 0-5 by Kazakhstan’s Ablaykhan Zhusupov in the final.
Earlier in the tournament, India had already secured two bronze medals through Jugnu (85 kilograms) and Nikhil (55 kilograms), bringing the total medal count to six: one gold, three silver, and two bronze.
India’s performance across various categories has once again demonstrated its strength and consistency on the global boxing platform. The presence of multiple finalists and podium finishes showcased the country’s impressive performance in the World Boxing Cup circuit.
Prior to this, the Indian team had a successful campaign against strong international competitors. The women’s team led the charge, winning four golds and one silver medal with five boxers. Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain (75 kilograms), current Asian champion Preeti Pawar (54 kilograms), Sakshi (51 kilograms), and Priya (60 kilograms) all claimed gold medals, while Parveen (65 kilograms) rounded off the women’s team’s stellar performance with a silver medal.
