Ranchi, August 17: Ahead of negotiations between the Jharkhand government and protesting students in Ranchi, Devendra Nath Mahto expressed hope for a solid resolution. He emphasized the need for a collaborative effort to prevent future paper leaks.
Speaking to a news agency while on a hunger strike, Mahto noted that the student movement has garnered widespread support across Jharkhand. “We have endured pain through 15 days of fasting. I hope today’s talks will ensure that future generations of students do not face paper leaks and fraud,” he stated.
He urged the government to establish a robust system and implement reforms, assuring that strict laws against paper leaks are necessary. “I am optimistic that we will reach an agreement on these issues during the discussions,” Mahto added.
Reflecting on past experiences, he mentioned, “I have witnessed CID and CBI investigations many times. These inquiries often give a fleeting sense of victory, but students rarely receive justice.”
Mahto highlighted the previous CGL examination, which was canceled under his leadership on January 29, 2024, due to similar issues. He questioned the guarantees that future CGL exams would be free from fraud.
He reiterated, “Students and the government must collaborate to ensure that paper leaks do not occur again. Those involved in paper leaks should face life imprisonment and fines.”
In a separate statement, protesting student Rahul Kranti, currently hospitalized, expressed skepticism about the success of the negotiations. “Given the government’s attitude and statements, we doubt the talks will be fruitful. Our demands include a CBI investigation, cancellation of 11-13 JPSC exams, cancellation of the CGL exam, and a review of all exams conducted since 2019.”
Kranti asserted that corruption has plagued all these exams under both Hemant-1 and Hemant-2 governments. He further stated, “We do not believe this government can bring about reforms due to its poor attitude. The government and the commission are colluding. Jobs have been sold by awarding tenders to blacklisted companies. I challenge Chief Minister Hemant Soren to let me hold the position for six months; I can investigate exam fraud and ensure a secure future for Jharkhand’s youth.”
