Jharkhand High Court Summons SSP Over FIR Registration Issues

Ranchi, April 27: The Jharkhand High Court expressed strong dissatisfaction with the functioning of the Dhanbad police during a hearing on a criminal appeal. The court deemed the failure to register an FIR concerning a cognizable offense as serious and summoned the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Dhanbad.

Justices Sujit Narayan Prasad and Sanjay Prasad, observing the gravity of the case, instructed the SSP to appear in person in court on Tuesday. The SSP is required to explain the circumstances under which no action was taken on the victim’s complaint.

This case involves an accused named Ravi Sahu, who had previously been granted bail by the High Court in a criminal matter. Despite being released on bail, there was no improvement in the accused’s behavior. The victim approached the court again, seeking the cancellation of his bail.

The victim alleges that upon his release from jail, the accused attempted to intimidate her through social media, causing her mental distress. She filed a written complaint at the cyber police station, clearly detailing threats and offenses under the IT Act.

During the hearing, the court found that the complaint presented by the victim prima facie indicated a serious cognizable offense. Nevertheless, the Dhanbad police failed to register an FIR.

The court acknowledged that the treatment of the victim falls within the realm of criminal behavior. Given the seriousness of the matter, the bench directed the Dhanbad SSP to provide a comprehensive response in person on Tuesday. Advocate Shailesh Kumar Singh represented the appellant in the case.
