New Delhi, August 27: The first ‘Kanda Express’ has set off from Nashik to New Delhi to alleviate rising onion prices and ensure availability in major consumption centers. This initiative aims to maintain a steady supply of onions in key markets, including Delhi, and reduce the mounting pressure on prices.
Onions provided under this government scheme will be distributed to consumers through the National Cooperative Consumers Federation (NCCF), Nafed, Central Warehousing, and other retail outlets. The onions are expected to be sold at a rate of ₹35 per kilogram.
The government believes that selling onions at a subsidized price and increasing supply will help control market prices.
In the Ghazipur vegetable market in East Delhi, traders are hopeful about this initiative. Trader Rajkumar Luthra informed a news agency that the onions from Nashik have not yet arrived at the market.
He mentioned that the shipment is expected to reach by Thursday evening or Friday morning. The onions from Nashik will be unloaded at the Aadarsh Nagar vegetable market and subsequently sold through auction.
Luthra noted that currently, onion prices in the Ghazipur market are around ₹40 to ₹45 per kilogram. If the additional shipment from Nashik arrives, the increased supply could alleviate price pressures.
He expressed optimism that this would provide relief not only to traders but also to the general public. An adequate supply of onions in the market may lead to a decrease in retail prices.
Onions are a staple in Indian kitchens, and fluctuations in their prices have a widespread impact.
