Jammu and Kashmir DGP Reviews Security Measures for Amarnath Yatra 2026

Srinagar, June 22: The Director General of Police (DGP) of Jammu and Kashmir, Nalin Prabhat, chaired a comprehensive security review meeting (SRM) on Monday to assess anti-terrorism measures and security arrangements for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra 2026.

Senior officials from various security forces stationed in South Kashmir participated in the meeting, including the Army’s anti-terrorism ‘Victor Force’, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the Border Security Force (BSF), and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) from the relevant districts also attended, providing detailed insights into the current security situation, anti-terrorism operations, and the multi-layered security framework being established for the pilgrimage.

During the review, the DGP evaluated the operational readiness of all security forces and emphasized the need for improved coordination and cooperation among the agencies involved in the pilgrimage’s security.

He stressed that a robust and integrated security system is essential for the safe and smooth conduct of the annual pilgrimage, which attracts thousands of devotees to the sacred cave temple in Jammu and Kashmir each year.

This meeting is part of the security agencies’ efforts to strengthen preparations for the upcoming pilgrimage and maintain a peaceful environment.

The annual Amarnath Yatra to the Himalayan cave temple will commence on July 3 this year and conclude on August 28, after 57 days.

To reach the cave temple, located at an altitude of 38,880 feet above sea level, pilgrims can either take the traditional long route from Pahalgam or the shorter Baltal route from the Ganderbal district in North Kashmir.

Pilgrims traveling via the Pahalgam route typically take four days to reach the cave temple, while those using the Baltal route can return to the base camp on the same day after visiting the cave temple.

The cave temple features a naturally formed ice structure (stalagmite) that waxes and wanes with the phases of the moon. Devotees believe this ice formation symbolizes the divine powers of Lord Shiva.
