New Delhi, July 20: Social activist Sonam Wangchuk has announced that he will end his hunger strike if various political party MPs commit to addressing accountability and reforms in the education system during the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament. He shared this information through a post on the social media platform ‘X’ on Sunday.
Wangchuk wrote, “When will I break my fast…?” He continued, “Dear friends and supporters, many of you have asked when I will end my hunger strike. As I previously informed my supporters, I will conclude my fast on July 20, if the government takes responsibility for recent failures in the education system (such as paper leaks) or if I and the CJP leadership are assured by MPs and leaders of various political parties that they will raise this issue in Parliament.”
He added, “If my health or any other reason prevents this, then MPs and leaders from different political parties must come to this hospital and assure me.”
Wangchuk also claimed that he wrote this message during his “illegal detention” at Safdarjung Hospital on July 19, where, according to him, his freedom to move, speak, and interact with others has been restricted.
Earlier, late Saturday night, Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, stated that he would only end his hunger strike if MPs and leaders from various political parties visit him at Safdarjung Hospital on Monday and assure him that they will prioritize accountability and educational reform during the parliamentary session.
Angmo said, “Sonam will only conclude his hunger strike when the leaders of political parties meet him in the hospital and assure him that they will prominently raise the issues of accountability and educational reform during the parliamentary session.”
