Doha, July 19: Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani met with Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Jaidi on Sunday. The Amir urged the implementation of the peace memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran.
According to a statement from the Amir’s administrative office, the Amiri Diwan, both leaders called for dialogue among all parties and the enforcement of agreements made under the MoU.
They emphasized the need for freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the importance of ensuring security and stability across the region.
The statement also noted that both leaders reviewed their bilateral relations and discussed ways to enhance cooperation in various sectors.
As reported by the Xinhua news agency, the US and Iran signed this MoU in mid-June, with both countries expected to engage in talks to reach a final agreement within 60 days. However, tensions have escalated recently, with multiple attacks occurring between the two nations in the Middle East.
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, stated that the US has violated its commitments under the agreement, prompting Iran to temporarily halt fulfilling its responsibilities under the MoU.
In an interview with the state television channel IRIB, Gharibabadi remarked that the US has either violated or suspended nearly all its commitments under the MoU. He emphasized that Iran’s primary focus is on its security, and currently, no negotiations are taking place.
He stated, “Our top priority is to defend our country with full strength. The US has already received a response indicating that such aggressive actions will not benefit them. If they act wisely, they should choose another path.”
Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei commented that the US’s violation of the recent peace MoU has once again demonstrated the lack of credibility in agreements signed by former President Donald Trump.
According to Iranian media, Khamenei made these remarks while addressing several key issues in a message to the nation.
