Ahmedabad, July 20: The Ahmedabad city police have established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a thorough investigation into the fireworks factory explosion that occurred in the Ramol area. This tragic incident resulted in the deaths of nine individuals and left six others injured.
In an order issued on Sunday, Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot stated that the SIT was formed to ensure a comprehensive investigation into the case registered at the Ramol police station following the explosion at New Gujarat Fire Works, located behind the Rapid Action Force (RAF) camp near the canal in Vastral.
The SIT will operate under the supervision of Joint Commissioner of Police (Sector-2) Jaypal Singh Rathore. It includes Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-8) Mayur Patil, Assistant Commissioner of Police (South Division) Y.A. Gohil, and Ramol Police Inspector V.D. Mori.
Commissioner Gehlot has directed that the JCP (Sector-2) will oversee the entire investigation and submit a progress report within ten days. The order specifies that the investigation must be conducted in a completely fair, neutral, and transparent manner, adhering to legal provisions.
Additionally, it has been mandated that all physical, scientific, documentary, and digital evidence from the scene be collected while maintaining their chain of custody. The investigation will be coordinated with forensic science laboratories (FSL), explosives experts, electrical specialists, the fire department, the labor department, and other relevant agencies.
Upon completion of the investigation, the SIT has been instructed to file a charge sheet in the competent court within the stipulated timeframe. During the trial, it will coordinate with the public prosecutor to ensure that all evidence, witnesses, and documents are presented without delay.
The explosion occurred around 3:45 PM on Saturday at the unit located at Survey Number 629/1/2/3 on Ramol-Gatrad Road in Vastral. The blast ignited a massive fire, completely destroying the factory and resulting in the deaths of nine workers, while six others suffered severe burns.
Police have registered a case under Sections 105, 287, 288, and 61(2) of the Indian Penal Code, as well as Sections 5(A) and 6 of the Explosive Substances Act, 1908, and Section 9(B) of the Explosives Act, 1884. Investigators allege that the factory was operating illegally despite the expiration of its license and failure to renew it.
