Dhaka, February 12: Shafiqur Rahman, the leader of the radical Islamic party Jamaat-e-Islami, expressed optimism that his party will gain power through the mandate of Bangladesh’s voters.
Rahman made this statement after casting his vote at the Monipur High School and College polling center in Dhaka on Thursday morning.
According to the prominent Bangladeshi newspaper, The Daily Star, Rahman stated, “If voting is conducted freely and fairly, we will accept the results. Others should also respect the people’s decision.”
He further added, “We pray for a peaceful, fair, and violence-free election that is acceptable to all. We hope for a government that belongs not to one individual, family, or party, but to the 180 million people of this country. We aspire for such a government.”
Jamaat-e-Islami and its leader, Shafiqur Rahman, have been accused of using religion and financial incentives to sway voters.
A report from NDTV revealed that the Jamaat coalition distributed leaflets nationwide offering 15,000 Bangladeshi Taka to voters who support the party.
The document claimed that families voting for the party would lead a “sin-free” life and be free from “severe punishment.”
The NDTV-obtained leaflets instructed voters to bring camera phones to polling booths and take pictures of their marked ballots as proof of voting for Shafiqur Rahman.
It stated, “You must ensure that all family members promise to vote for the ‘Dari Palla’ (scale) symbol. This promise will make your next life sin-free and free you from severe punishment. You need to go to the center on election day morning and bring a camera phone to take a photo as proof after marking your ballot.”
The party promised that after the election results, voters would receive 15,000 Taka via the Bkash app or cash, along with some advance payments through Bkash.
