Jackie Shroff Remembers Nargis Dutt on Her Birth Anniversary

Mumbai, June 1: Bollywood’s legendary actress Nargis Dutt is being remembered today on her birth anniversary. Actor Jackie Shroff took to social media to honor her memory.

He shared a black-and-white photograph of Nargis Dutt on his Instagram Stories, captioning it, “Nargis ji, you will always remain in our hearts. June 1, 1929 – May 3, 1981.”

Born in Kolkata, Nargis left an indelible mark on Indian cinema throughout her three-decade career. She began her journey as a child artist at just six years old and is still celebrated for iconic films like “Mother India” and “Raat Aur Din.” Nargis was the first actress in Indian cinema to be awarded the Padma Shri and also the first actress to be nominated to the Rajya Sabha.

Her career kicked off with the 1935 film “Talash-e-Haq.” However, her first leading role was in Mehboob Khan’s “Taqdeer.” During the 1940s and 1950s, she starred in several blockbuster films alongside Raj Kapoor. Their on-screen chemistry was beloved by audiences, and it is said that they shared a close bond off-screen as well.

Reports suggest that Raj Kapoor fell in love with Nargis while filming “Barsaat” or “Andaaz” in 1948. Their on-screen pairing was exceptional, and they were considered perfect complements to each other. Nargis wished to marry Raj Kapoor, but he refused to leave his wife. Faced with uncertainty, Nargis ended the relationship after nine years.

Time passed, and Nargis met Sunil Dutt on the set of “Mother India,” where he saved her life during a fire. The couple married in 1958 and had three children: Sanjay Dutt, Namrata Dutt, and Priya Dutt. It is said that Nargis’s choice of Sunil Dutt as a life partner deeply affected Raj Kapoor.
