Geeta Kapoor Reflects on the Evolution of Dance Careers Since the 90s

Mumbai, June 25: Choreographer and television personality Geeta Kapoor reminisced about her early days as a dancer in Bollywood during the early 90s, a time when pursuing a career in dance was not considered a viable option.

In a recent interview, Geeta noted that the perception of dance has significantly changed over the years. It is now viewed as a legitimate and rewarding career choice. She stated, “The mindset around dance has shifted. It is now seen as a career option. Back when we were dancing, it wasn’t considered a viable career path.”

Reflecting on her beginnings, Geeta explained that as opportunities in the field grew, financial incentives became a motivating factor. “We did it because we wanted to earn money. At that time, we were getting work, but I wouldn’t say it was solely about making money. We did it because we loved it. It started as a hobby that transformed into a career,” she shared.

The renowned choreographer admitted that she never anticipated dance would become her profession when she first started learning. “For me, dance was a hobby. My mother enrolled me in a class where I learned the basics of folk dance, Kathak, and Bharatanatyam. I never thought I would earn money from this profession or become a choreographer,” Geeta recalled.

She further explained, “When I realized it could be a source of income, especially after working with Javed Jaffrey, I understood that earnings were increasing. Initially, we performed for 500 or 1,000 rupees, and back then, even 1,000 rupees was considered a significant amount.”

Geeta Kapoor has been a part of the Bollywood industry for nearly three decades and has assisted renowned choreographer Farah Khan in many hit songs. One of her notable performances is in the famous song “Tujhe Yaad Na Meri Aayi” from the blockbuster film ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.’
