IUML Separates from DMK Alliance, Future Political Alliances Under Review

Chennai, June 20: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) announced its separation from the DMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu on Saturday. This decision was made during the party’s General Council meeting, where a total of 14 resolutions were passed, including the formal proposal to sever ties with the DMK alliance.

Party leaders indicated that decisions regarding future electoral partnerships will be made based on the circumstances at the time of upcoming by-elections and local body elections.

This announcement comes in the wake of a shifting political landscape following the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections in 2026. Voting took place in a single phase on April 23, 2026, across all 234 assembly seats, with the DMK alliance, AIADMK alliance, BJP, and other parties in the fray.

The Tamilga Vetrik Kadagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, and the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) contested the elections independently, while PMK founder Dr. S. Ramadoss and former Chief Minister V.K. Sasikala joined forces for the electoral battle.

In this multi-cornered contest, over 4,000 candidates participated. The counting results surprised many as TVK emerged as the largest party, winning 108 seats in its first assembly election. The DMK alliance secured 73 seats, while the AIADMK alliance managed to win 53 seats.

Although TVK did not achieve a clear majority, it later formed the government with support from Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), CPI(M), CPI, and some allies from the DMK alliance, securing a confidence vote in the assembly.

The IUML had contested the assembly elections in alliance with the DMK and won two seats. Currently, IUML MLA A.M. Shahjahan serves as a minister in the TVK government.

IUML leaders believe that remaining in the DMK alliance is no longer justified given the current political circumstances. However, the party has kept its options open for future alliances, stating that decisions will be made at the appropriate time before upcoming elections.
