Tel Aviv, March 30: The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have taken decisive action in response to the misconduct involving journalists in the West Bank. On Monday, the IDF suspended an entire battalion and halted operational activities of the reserve battalion.
This battalion is part of the Netzah unit. According to the military, the battalion has been immediately relocated from the West Bank for training and will not participate in any operations until the investigation is complete. The soldiers will receive professional and ethical training, and separate actions will be taken against those involved in the incident.
The IDF confirmed this information via its official X account. Chief of General Staff Eyal Zamir completed an investigation into the behavior of IDF soldiers towards journalists while securing an area during the evacuation of a post in Judea and Samaria.
Zamir acknowledged that established protocols were not followed. He noted that the investigation revealed several shortcomings in the soldiers’ treatment of reporters. Additionally, there were deficiencies in conduct rules, deviations from IDF orders, and improper communication with members of the press.
In a statement, Zamir expressed regret over the incident, emphasizing that the IDF respects press freedom in the area. As a result, the operational deployment of the battalion has been suspended. He stated, “This is a serious ethical incident that goes against IDF rules and values. We, as soldiers, have sworn that weapons will only be used to complete missions, never for revenge. We will not tolerate such incidents in the IDF.”
It is important to note that last week, a CNN reporting team faced misconduct. Allegations indicate that on March 26, soldiers detained the team in the Palestinian village of Tayasir. Moreover, photojournalist Cyril Theophilos was assaulted, resulting in damage to his camera. The team was reporting on an attack carried out by Israeli settlers shortly before the incident.
The Foreign Press Association (FPA), an international media organization, condemned the misconduct. The organization described the incident as violent and a direct attack on press freedom.
They alleged that soldiers pointed guns at journalists and bystanders, despite the journalists having identified themselves. Amid growing pressure, the IDF presented its clarification on Monday.
