Tel Aviv, March 30: A tragic incident has emerged in southern Lebanon, where three journalists lost their lives during Israeli operations against Hezbollah. Following a preliminary investigation, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have admitted to a soldier’s error and stated that further actions will be determined after a comprehensive investigation.
The IDF reported that the Chief of General Staff completed an inquiry into the conduct of IDF soldiers while securing the area during the evacuation of an illegal outpost in the Judea and Samaria region.
In response to the incident, Chief of General Staff LTG Eyal Zamir remarked, “This is a serious moral incident that contradicts IDF rules and values. We all took an oath upon enlistment that weapons would only be used to fulfill missions, never for revenge. We will not tolerate such occurrences within the ranks of the IDF, especially during this just and historic war. It is our duty to uphold the leadership and values of the IDF.”
Zamir further noted, “The Netzah Yehuda Battalion, which includes a reserve battalion made up of its veteran soldiers, is dear and essential to us, and we have invested significantly in strengthening it. We value the reserve soldiers who serve diligently, but there is no room for incorrect conduct in the IDF. The responsibility to uphold our values lies first with the commanders, and we will not compromise on this.”
In a statement released by the IDF, it was mentioned that the results of the investigation were presented to the Chief of General Staff on Sunday after a review by the Central Command’s commander. The inquiry involved the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), the Head of the Personnel Directorate, the Military Advocate General, and the commanders of the Judea and Samaria Division. The findings indicated that the soldiers involved were working to prevent confrontation while operating near the area where an illegal outpost was evacuated on Wednesday and Thursday nights.
The statement detailed that during this operation, a team of journalists arrived at the scene alongside several Palestinians. The soldiers working in the area confirmed the identities of both the reporting team and the Palestinian individuals, ensuring the safety of both groups. After security screenings, all but one team member were released, as the individual was identified as a journalist.
The IDF acknowledged that the soldiers on the ground mistreated the reporters during their interactions. The statement emphasized that such misconduct does not align with IDF values. Consequently, actions against the implicated Israeli soldier will be determined based on the ongoing investigation.
The IDF also noted that the inquiry revealed several shortcomings in the soldiers’ conduct towards the reporters. The IDF respects and promotes press freedom in the area and expressed regret over the incident. The Israeli Defense Forces maintained direct communication with reporters during and after the event, personally apologizing for the circumstances.
Following the investigation, the IDF decided to immediately halt the operational deployment of the battalion in the area. The battalion will remain in reserve service and undergo a process to strengthen its professional and normative foundations. Once this process is completed and in accordance with the Central Command’s decision, the battalion will resume operations.
The Chief of General Staff expressed confidence in the battalion commander’s ability to lead this foundational strengthening process. He emphasized that IDF soldiers must remain calm, demonstrate leadership, and show respect for their uniforms and the army they represent. The statement concluded that calls for revenge from IDF soldiers are taken very seriously, especially when a soldier is armed.
