Major Drug Bust in New Zealand Links to Indira Gandhis Assassins Nephew

Wellington, March 30: New Zealand has witnessed its largest drug seizure to date, bringing renewed attention to Baltej Singh, the nephew of Satwant Singh. Satwant Singh was one of the security personnel involved in the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984.

A report released on Monday highlighted the complex interplay of “international crime, historical legacy, and legal intricacies.” Citing an investigation from Stuff, New Zealand’s largest news organization, Khalsa Vox reported that Baltej Singh has been identified as the primary suspect behind the record-breaking drug haul.

According to the March 28 report, this marks the first time a New Zealand media outlet has named him. Previously, he had opted to relinquish longstanding legal protections to conceal his identity.

The Khalsa Vox report noted, “For nearly two years, Singh’s identity was protected under New Zealand’s strict name suppression laws, which allow the courts to prevent the public disclosure of a suspect’s identity. However, these protections only apply within the country. International media outlets, including Indian publications and Canada’s CTV News, had previously disclosed his name.”

The report further stated, “Analysts suggest that Singh’s decision to withdraw his privacy petition reflects a practical stance. They believe that as the case gained international attention, the legal battle to keep his identity concealed in New Zealand became not only costly but also ineffective.”

The investigation by New Zealand authorities began on March 2, 2023, following a tragic incident where 21-year-old Aiden Sagala died after consuming liquid methamphetamine hidden in a can of ‘Honey Bear Beer.’ Initially perceived as a tragic accident, the case quickly drew widespread scrutiny.

Authorities traced the source to a storage facility in Auckland, where they discovered nearly 700 kilograms of liquid methamphetamine. This seizure is the largest of its kind in New Zealand’s history. The drugs were cleverly concealed within everyday items, including a kombucha shipment from the U.S., coconut water from India, and thousands of beer cans sent from Canada.

The report indicated that police launched a large-scale investigation under “Project Lavender.”

It detailed that Singh was apprehended while attempting to board a flight to Dubai at Auckland Airport. Investigators allege that this indicated he was trying to flee the country. He was later convicted and sentenced to 22 years in prison for importing methamphetamine, ephedrine, and cocaine, among other charges.

Another co-defendant, Himmatjeet Jimmy Singh Kahlon, was found guilty of manslaughter for distributing meth-laced cans that led to Sagala’s death, receiving a 21-year sentence.

As the investigation progressed, New Zealand police seized assets worth approximately NZD 36 million (around USD 18 million), including real estate suspected of being linked to the drug network.

The report concluded, “For New Zealand, this case not only highlights the largest drug seizure but also serves as a reminder of how international networks can interconnect.”
