New Delhi, May 23: Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu believes that Ishan Kishan‘s departure from the Mumbai Indians has allowed him to advance his career. In IPL 2026, Kishan has excelled while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad, amassing 569 runs at a strike rate of 178 across 14 matches.
Rayudu shared his insights during an interview with ESPN Cricinfo, stating, “Growing up in a franchise like Mumbai, Ishan aspired to become a superstar. He is now a superstar, but competing against all the stars around him was quite challenging. Those experienced players know when to switch on their game and when to take a step back. However, many young players struggle with this balance. It’s a significant challenge, and I am confident that Ishan has learned this, albeit the hard way.”
The former cricketer acknowledged the considerable improvement in Kishan’s batting. He noted, “Ishan’s shot selection has seen substantial enhancement. In his early years, he made some poor decisions regarding shot selection. However, we have observed him making the right choices most of the time now. I believe his captaincy for Jharkhand has contributed significantly to his understanding of the game. Sometimes, taking on captaincy roles helps players become better batsmen, and he is one of those who has shown remarkable clarity in his game.”
So far, IPL 2026 has been exceptional for Ishan Kishan. He has scored six half-centuries this season. With Pat Cummins absent, Kishan also took on the captaincy for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the initial matches. In a recent game against Royal Challengers Bangalore, he delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 79 runs off 46 balls, including eight fours and three sixes. Thanks to his remarkable innings, Sunrisers Hyderabad posted a total of 255 runs for the loss of four wickets in 20 overs, while RCB managed only 200 runs for four wickets in response.
