New Delhi, October 7 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian women’s cricket team is undergoing a significant transition as Smriti Mandhana steps up as the new captain following Harmanpreet Kaur’s recent resignation. Mandhana and fellow middle-order batter Jemimah Rodrigues took to social media to express their gratitude and admiration for Kaur’s decade-long leadership.
In an Instagram story, Mandhana reflected on their shared journey, stating, “It has been wonderful playing alongside you for so many years. The last ten years under your leadership have been remarkable. Together, we will strive to bring more honors to our country.”
Rodrigues echoed these sentiments, posting, “Congratulations on all that you have achieved. Thank you for your years of leadership and everything you have done for the team.”
Harmanpreet Kaur announced her departure from the captaincy during a BCCI review meeting in Guwahati. Under her guidance, the Indian women’s team enjoyed a successful run, including winning their first ICC event, the 2025 ODI World Cup, where they defeated South Africa in the final. Kaur, who became the full-time captain in 2016, also led the team to four Asia Cup victories in 2012, 2016, 2022, and 2026, and secured back-to-back gold medals at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games and the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. Additionally, the team claimed a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
In her decade-long tenure, Kaur captained the team in five Test matches, 51 ODIs, and 155 T20 matches, leaving a significant mark on Indian women’s cricket. Following her departure, the explosive left-handed opener Smriti Mandhana has been appointed to lead the team in all formats.
