
New Delhi, October 7 (Daily Kiran) : The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially concluded Ajit Agarkar’s term as the chief selector of the Indian cricket team, a period marked by significant accomplishments. The board extended its best wishes to Agarkar for his future endeavors.
In a message posted on their official X account, the BCCI highlighted the memorable moments during Agarkar’s tenure, which included three ICC trophies, two Asia Cup titles, two gold medals at the Asian Games, and a journey to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. “Thank you, Ajit Agarkar, for your commitment, determination, and contributions as chairman of the men’s selection committee. Best wishes for your future,” the post read.
Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, also expressed his appreciation for Agarkar’s leadership and offered his congratulations for the new chapter ahead. In a post on X, Gambhir stated, “Dear Ajit Bhai, it has been an honor to work with you. Those three ICC trophies are a testament to your unwavering resolve. Always putting the team first. History will be kinder to you. Thank you for everything, and best wishes for your future endeavors.”
Agarkar was appointed as the chairman of the senior men’s selection committee by the BCCI on July 4, 2023. Under his leadership, the selected team reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, won the T20 World Cup in 2024, and secured titles in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and the T20 World Cup 2026. Additionally, the team achieved two gold medals at the Asian Games and claimed two Asia Cup titles. His tenure has been filled with pride and achievement, culminating in his last selection for the Indian team for the ongoing T20 series against the West Indies.
The BCCI has called for applications for the appointment of a new chief selector. Until a regular chief selector is appointed, former spinner Pragyan Ojha has been assigned to this role. The current selection panel also includes Shiv Sundar Das, Ajay Ratra, and RP Singh. According to BCCI protocols, the chief selector is typically the player with the most Test matches played.
