Isaac Okoh Aims for Gold at European Championships After Commonwealth Victory

New Delhi, September 19 (Daily Kiran) : Isaac Okoh, the Commonwealth Games gold medalist from England, is brimming with confidence as he prepares for the European Boxing Championships. Following a stellar performance this year, he is eager to secure another gold medal.

Despite a less-than-stellar showing at the World Championships, Okoh made a triumphant comeback by winning gold in the 90-kilogram category at the Commonwealth Games. He aims to continue this momentum at the ongoing championships in Sofia.

Okoh will kick off his campaign on Sunday against Poland’s Alexey Sevastyanov in the first round. Speaking to Sky Sports, he expressed his determination, stating, “I am confident I can beat anyone in the world right now. It will take a very good fighter to defeat me. There are many excellent competitors in this weight class, and I am on their level. I am fully prepared to contend for the gold medal and expect to win against anyone in this tournament.”

Reflecting on his Commonwealth Games victory, Okoh shared that winning the gold felt like a dream come true. He noted, “It’s like a dream come true. When you start boxing, the Commonwealth Games is one of those tournaments you dream of competing in, and winning the gold medal in front of friends and family is a proud moment. It boosts my confidence for the future, especially with the Olympic qualifiers coming up soon, and the Olympics just two years away. Since the World Championships, I have been boxing exceptionally well, and I knew I had to perform at this level.”

Okoh described the Commonwealth Games as a historic achievement for his country and emphasized the strength of the England team heading into the European Championships. He said, “Our team is strong. After returning from the Commonwealth Games, our medal tally was remarkable, one of our best results in a long time. We have an excellent team filled with talent, youth, and a desire to achieve.
