London, September 21 (Daily Kiran) : The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has appointed former batsman Jonathan Trott as the head coach of the England Lions for upcoming tours to the Caribbean, South Africa, and Sri Lanka. The announcement was made on Monday.
At 45, Trott brings a wealth of international coaching experience to the role. He has successfully served as the head coach for Afghanistan since 2022, leading the team to the semifinals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 under his guidance.
Trott also worked as an assistant coach for the senior England men’s team during the COVID-19 pandemic. He recently stepped in as interim head coach during the Lions’ T20 series against Sri Lanka, where they achieved a 2-0 series victory. His coaching experience includes stints with Ireland and Glamorgan.
This new appointment follows the resignation of Andrew Flintoff in early August, who accepted a position as head coach for Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League.
In his playing career, Trott scored 3,835 runs in 52 Test matches and 2,819 runs in 68 ODIs. He also participated in seven T20 internationals and was part of three Ashes-winning teams, having played 22 matches for the Lions.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the role, Trott stated, “I’m very happy to be back in the England setup and am excited to take on the role of head coach for England Lions. Having played for the Lions myself, I know how valuable this experience can be for player development both on and off the field. It played a significant role in my own journey. I’m eager to work with the players and staff to help them reach their potential and prepare for the challenges of international cricket.”
