Tehran, August 22: Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, has stated that the United States’ economic pressure campaign against Iran will fail, just like its previous strategies.
Araghchi expressed his views on the social media platform ‘X’, stating, “Fourteen years ago: ‘the toughest sanctions in history’ failed. Eight years ago: ‘maximum pressure’ failed. Five months ago: ‘unconditional surrender’ failed. Today: ‘the harshest economic campaign yet’ will also fail.”
This remark comes in the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement on Wednesday, declaring the launch of “the harshest economic campaign ever” against any nation cooperating with Iran.
Trump described this initiative as an “unprecedented level of economic warfare and isolation” on his social media platform, ‘Truth Social’. He referred to this move as “Economic D-Day.”
Earlier, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, stated that the U.S. is intensifying pressure on Iran under the guise of “economic warfare.” He suggested that this is an attempt to mask Washington’s past failures.
According to Iran’s state news agency IRNA, Gharibabadi noted that while the U.S. claims Iran is “on the brink of collapse,” it simultaneously seeks assistance from all its allied nations.
He argued that to cover up its failures, the U.S. is creating an even larger failure. He pointed out that military actions yielded no results, prompting Washington to label its next defeat as “economic warfare.”
On June 18, the U.S. and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at resolving ongoing conflicts in the region, including the situation in Lebanon. Under this agreement, both countries were expected to reach a final accord through negotiations within 60 days. This period ended on Monday, yet the future of these talks remains uncertain following heightened tensions between the two nations last month.
