New Delhi, March 13: The Iran national football team has issued a strong rebuttal to U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks suggesting that they should not participate in the FIFA World Cup for their own safety.
The Iranian team asserted that no nation can prevent them from competing in the World Cup, emphasizing that it is FIFA that organizes the event, not any single country.
Trump made his comments on Thursday via a post on the social media platform Truth, stating, “The Iran national soccer team is welcome at the World Cup, but I really don’t think it’s right for them to be there for their own safety. Thank you for your attention. President Donald J. Trump.”
In response, the Iranian national soccer team took to their official social media account, declaring, “No one can exclude Iran from the tournament. If the U.S. is the host and cannot ensure the safety of participating teams, they should be held accountable.”
The post further stated, “The World Cup is a historic and international event. Its governing body is FIFA, not a single country. The Iranian national team, which embodies the strength of Iran’s brave sons and has achieved many significant victories, was among the first teams to qualify for this major tournament.”
In an Instagram post, they added, “No one can keep the Iranian national team out of the World Cup; only a host country can be excluded if it cannot guarantee the safety of participating teams.”
Iran, which topped Group A in the Asian qualifying third round, has qualified for its fourth consecutive World Cup and is set to play three matches in the U.S.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino stated on Wednesday that he met with President Trump, who assured him that Iran is welcome to participate in the 2026 World Cup. The tournament is scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19 across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.
However, Iran’s sports minister, Ahmad Doonyamali, mentioned on state television that Iran may not be able to participate in the 2026 World Cup due to airstrikes from the U.S. and Israel, which he claims have resulted in the assassination of their leaders and significant insecurity. He stated, “In the past eight or nine months, they have dragged us into two wars, killed thousands of our people, and committed severe injustices. Under these circumstances, participating in the tournament is impossible.”
