IPL 2026: CSK May Regret Letting Go of Rising Star Samir Rizvi

New Delhi, April 5: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made headlines during the IPL 2024 mega auction by acquiring an uncapped wicketkeeper-batsman from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, for a staggering ₹8.40 crore. This move surprised many, as the player, Samir Rizvi, has now emerged as a key match-winner for Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2026.

CSK is known for nurturing players, giving them ample time to showcase their talent. However, this was not the case for Rizvi. He began his IPL career with a six off his very first ball, but his performance in IPL 2024 fell short of expectations. In eight matches, he managed only 51 runs at a modest average of 12.75. Consequently, CSK decided to release him before IPL 2025.

While Rizvi continued to excel in domestic cricket, his fortunes changed during the IPL 2025 mega auction when Delhi Capitals picked him up for ₹95 lakh. He played five matches for DC that season, showing improvement with 121 runs, including a half-century, with a top score of 58.

Rizvi’s consistent performance earned him a spot in IPL 2026, where he has truly shone as a match-winner for DC. He has led the team to victory in two consecutive matches under challenging circumstances.

In a thrilling match against Lucknow Super Giants, DC found themselves in trouble at 26 runs for 4 wickets. Rizvi stepped up, scoring an unbeaten 70 runs and securing the win, earning the Player of the Match award. In another match against Mumbai, he scored 90 runs off 51 balls, hitting seven sixes and seven fours. Although he narrowly missed his first IPL century, his contributions were pivotal in leading his team to victory once again, and he was named Player of the Match once more.

CSK, which spent ₹28.40 crore on young talents like Karthik Sharma and Prashant Veer during the IPL 2026 auction, may now regret their decision to release the 22-year-old Rizvi, especially given that Sharma and Veer’s performances have been underwhelming thus far.
