Strong Earthquake Strikes Indonesia, Measuring 5.2 on the Richter Scale

Indonesia, October 4 (Daily Kiran) : Early Sunday morning, a significant earthquake jolted Indonesia at 5:07 AM local time. The tremor registered a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale and was recorded at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers. This event follows a series of devastating earthquakes that struck the region in August, leading to loss of life and extensive damage.

According to the National Earthquake Center, the earthquake’s epicenter was located near the surface, contributing to its felt intensity. Indonesia has a history of seismic activity, with several earthquakes occurring in quick succession last month. Notably, a 6.4 magnitude quake hit the Banda Sea on August 24, occurring at a depth of around 37 kilometers.

On August 18, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake also struck near Nias Island in North Sumatra, with its epicenter located approximately 147 kilometers southeast of South Nias Regency at a depth of 29 kilometers.

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that on August 15, a severe earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale impacted East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province, resulting in significant casualties and damage. The agency noted that the death toll from this quake reached 100, with 1,603 injuries reported and over 180,000 people displaced.

As Indonesia continues to grapple with these seismic challenges, authorities are on high alert for further aftershocks and are monitoring the situation closely.
