Apple’s newly launched iPhone 17 Pro has climbed to third place globally in DxOMark’s latest smartphone camera rankings, edging past the Vivo X200 Ultra by just one point. However, the result has triggered debate over how DxOMark weighs photo versus video performance.

According to the preliminary results, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max now sit behind only the Oppo Find X8 Ultra and Huawei Pura 80 Ultra. While Vivo maintains a clear lead in photography with a photo sub-score of 173, Apple’s 168 score was boosted by record-breaking video performance.
DxOMark noted that the iPhone delivered consistent exposure, accurate white balance, smooth HDR, and reliable stabilization, even in difficult lighting conditions. The upgraded 48MP telephoto lens also helped Apple narrow the zoom gap with competitors.
In still photography, however, Vivo and Huawei remain stronger options. Vivo impressed with superior detail, wider dynamic range, and better low-light results, while Huawei balanced detail with natural color output. DxOMark’s sample comparisons confirmed that Apple’s images were more neutral and flatter compared to Vivo’s vibrant style.
The rankings have stirred controversy, with critics arguing that Vivo’s photography advantage should outweigh Apple’s video lead. Since DxOMark’s scoring system gives significant weight to video performance, the iPhone 17 Pro managed to leapfrog into the global top three.
The final test report is still pending, and scores may shift slightly. But as it stands, the iPhone 17 Pro appears to be the best choice for creators who prioritize video as much as photography.
