New Delhi, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has established a roadmap for selecting the host city for the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This development brings India one step closer to its ambition of hosting the world’s largest sporting event for the first time. India is among seven nations currently in discussions with the IOC regarding their bids.
On Tuesday, the IOC released a handbook detailing the selection process for the 2036 Games. The Executive Board plans to shortlist interested countries by March 2027, marking the next phase of the selection process.
Alongside India, the other contenders include Germany, Hungary, Qatar, the Republic of Korea, South Africa, and Turkey. These nations are actively engaging with the IOC to express their interest in hosting the event.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) formally submitted a “Letter of Intent” to the IOC’s Future Host Commission on October 1, 2024, indicating India’s desire to host the 2036 Games.
The Future Host Commission oversees the selection process for future Olympic Games. The final decision on the host will be made by IOC members through a multi-stage selection process.
IOC President Kirsty Coventry highlighted the importance of athletes in her official statement. She noted her fortunate experience of participating in five Olympic Games across four continents, emphasizing that each event brought unique qualities. Coventry stated, “No matter where the games are held, one thing must never change: athletes should always be at the heart of everything we do.”
As part of the newly announced roadmap, interested parties will present virtually to the Future Host Commission in November 2026. Following these presentations, the IOC’s Executive Board will evaluate the viability of the shortlisted projects by March 2027 before initiating a strategic dialogue.
The assessment of India and other bidders will consider various technical and strategic criteria, including venue master plans, athlete experiences, funding strategies, political and public support, organizational capacity, and legacy plans.
Projects will also be evaluated based on their alignment with local development plans and the broader objectives of the Olympic movement. The process will reach its final stage in December 2028, when the Executive Board will begin targeted dialogues with selected preferred hosts.
Afterward, these preferred hosts will provide final answers to questionnaires and guarantees. The IOC members will then select the host for the 2036 Olympic Games during a session scheduled for mid-2029. The IOC has set a deadline of October 31, 2026, beyond which no new interested parties will be considered for hosting the Games.
