New Delhi, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : Shimron Hetmyer made headlines for the wrong reasons during the first T20 match against India, held in New Delhi. After scoring just 5 runs, he became the Caribbean player with the most run outs in T20 international cricket.
In this unfortunate statistic, Hetmyer surpassed Andre Fletcher, who has been run out six times. Other players, including Shai Hope, Akil Hossain, Sunil Narine, and Lendl Simmons, have each been run out four times.
West Indies lost their first wicket in the fourth over when Kieron Pollard was dismissed for 12 runs. Hetmyer entered the match and struck a boundary on his first ball. Following that, he took a single on the next delivery, allowing Hope to take the strike. Hope managed to retain the strike after running for a single on the last ball of the over.
During the sixth over, bowled by Axar Patel, no runs were scored on the first delivery. However, on the next ball, Hope attempted to sneak a single, which led to Hetmyer’s run out. This over also saw the dismissal of Rovman Powell for a duck, marking it as a “double-wicket maiden.”
With this run out, Axar Patel climbed to third place in the list of bowlers with the most maiden overs in T20 internationals, having bowled six maiden overs. He trails Jasprit Bumrah, who has 13, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, with 10.
On Tuesday, India, having won the toss, invited West Indies to bat first at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium. Naman Dhir made his T20 debut for Team India, while Akil Hossain celebrated his 100th T20 international match for the West Indies.
