Kolkata, May 19: Officials from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) have initiated an investigation into multiple properties allegedly owned or co-owned by Abhishek Banerjee, the general secretary of the Trinamool Congress and a Member of Parliament. The current mayor of KMC is Firhad Hakim, a four-time Trinamool Congress legislator and a former member of the cabinet led by Mamata Banerjee.
KMC has issued notices for 17 properties under Section 400(1) of the 1980 Act. This section reportedly allows owners of illegal constructions to present their case before the authorities. These properties fall within KMC’s jurisdiction and are linked to Abhishek Banerjee.
Copies of these notices have been affixed to the walls of the properties. Two residences of the Diamond Harbour MP, located at 188A Harish Mukherjee Road and 121 Kalighat Road, are under KMC’s scrutiny.
In the case of the property on Harish Mukherjee Road, a corporate entity named ‘Leaps and Bounds Private Limited’ has received a notice, which is allegedly owned by the Banerjee family. For the property on Kalighat Road, the notice has been issued to Abhishek Banerjee’s mother, Lata Banerjee.
Both properties are situated in Kolkata and are in close proximity to the former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat. As of the time of this report, there has been no response from any member of the Trinamool Congress regarding these notices.
During Mamata Banerjee’s tenure, opposition parties such as CPI(M), Congress, and BJP have been vocal about the significant number of properties registered under various members of the Banerjee family. However, Mamata Banerjee dismissed these allegations as mere mudslinging by opposition parties.
Interestingly, KMC officials issued these notices following remarks made by the current Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari during a rally in Falta, South 24 Parganas, last week, where he hinted at investigating properties linked to a corporate entity reportedly owned by Abhishek Banerjee. While the Chief Minister did not directly name Banerjee, he referred to him as “Mr. Nephew.” Adhikari also claimed to have brought a list of 24 properties owned by Mr. Nephew’s company.
