New Delhi, August 24: Ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections, Congress MP Amar Singh has addressed the ongoing discussions regarding the Chief Ministerial face within the party. He declined to comment on Sukjinder Singh Randhawa’s statements, emphasizing that Randhawa is a senior leader communicating with the high command. Thus, responding to his remarks is beyond Singh’s jurisdiction.
Amar Singh criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab, particularly on issues of law and order and drug-related problems. When asked about the clarity and strength that would come from announcing a Chief Ministerial candidate, he stated that he adheres to a principle of not discussing internal party matters publicly. If there are issues to address, he will do so in the appropriate forums, not through the press.
Regarding Randhawa’s comments on the CM face, Singh expressed respect for him as a senior leader who is addressing the high command, implying that the high command would respond to him.
When questioned about an alleged audio involving Goldy Barar, Amar Singh stated he had neither seen the audio nor knows anyone involved. However, he accused the AAP government of failing to maintain law and order. Singh pointed out that AAP gained power by promising the public a chance to improve conditions, yet people are now frustrated with the current state of law and order. He highlighted rising incidents of murder, ongoing drug issues, and extortion complaints, stressing that citizens are concerned for their safety.
He criticized the AAP government, stating that the public is now waiting for the election code of conduct to be implemented. Singh claimed that the electorate is determined to oust the AAP from power, predicting that Congress will form the government in the upcoming elections.
On the question of differing opinions among Punjab Congress leaders and the internal strife before elections, Amar Singh described it as a reflection of the party’s internal democratic process. He suggested that what the media perceives as infighting should be viewed as internal democracy within Congress. He noted that party leaders are actively working in their constituencies rather than remaining idle. He cited his engagement with the public in Mandi Gobindgarh and Amloh, stating that he will continue to connect with various regions.
Singh asserted that all Congress leaders are focused on preparing for the elections, with the party’s goal being victory. He mentioned that the leaders are united and that Congress will form the government in the upcoming assembly elections. He also indicated that Rahul Gandhi’s program is being organized, and Congress leaders will participate. Singh expressed confidence that Congress will achieve favorable results in the elections.
Responding to former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s ongoing promotion as a potential CM face, Amar Singh reiterated his reluctance to comment, acknowledging Channi as a senior and respected leader who is addressing the high command.
When asked about objections from some party leaders regarding a statement made by Congress leader Deepender Hooda after the death of Sajjan Kumar, Amar Singh refrained from commenting on other leaders’ statements. However, he clarified his stance on Sajjan Kumar in light of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, stating that it is inappropriate to speak positively about someone convicted in those events. He emphasized that no leader in Punjab, whether Sikh or non-Sikh, can provide a positive endorsement for Kumar, as he has been judicially found guilty.
