Intense Debate in Parliament Over Maoism, Shinde Highlights Government Achievements Amidst Congress Opposition

New Delhi, March 30: A heated exchange of views unfolded in the Lok Sabha on Monday during a debate regarding the government’s efforts to eradicate left-wing extremism. Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde praised the Maharashtra government’s initiatives, particularly in Gadchiroli district, which has long been affected by Maoist activities. He stated that the state government is making significant efforts to eliminate Maoism.

Shinde also mentioned that when Eknath Shinde was the guardian minister of Gadchiroli, he personally visited the district and celebrated Diwali with the locals, symbolizing the administration’s outreach and the trust of the people. He asserted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, the complete eradication of Maoism is now possible.

Congress MP Saptagiri Sankar sharply countered this claim. He questioned whether the ruling party was ignoring the sacrifices made by previous governments and police forces, who faced the brunt of Maoist violence. Sankar remarked that listening to the ruling MPs, one might think that Home Minister Amit Shah single-handedly eliminated Maoists, while the contributions of others were being overlooked.

Sankar, representing a region still affected by left-wing extremism, reminded the house that between 2006 and 2009, Congress leaders in Chhattisgarh were targeted and killed in Maoist attacks. He pointedly asked if any BJP leader had sacrificed their life in the freedom struggle or in the fight against Maoist violence, highlighting that the sacrifices of Congress workers and leaders were being disregarded.

The debate also revealed political differences regarding who should be credited in the fight against extremism. The ruling party emphasized current leadership and state government initiatives, while the opposition demanded recognition of past sacrifices and a proper acknowledgment of their contributions.

The discussion focused on the progress made in reducing Maoist influence in districts like Gadchiroli, as well as the ongoing challenges in these areas. It featured a robust debate between the ruling party and the opposition regarding historical context, political responsibility, and achievements in national security.
