New Delhi, April 24: The Indian Navy ship INS Sudarshini has reached Spain. This is not just any naval vessel; it is a sailing ship that has been navigating the seas using its sails. The ship has embarked on a journey covering over 22,000 nautical miles.
This voyage is inspired by the spirit of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ and the vision of ‘Oceans.’ Under the Lokayan initiative, INS Sudarshini’s mission conveys a message of building bridges of trust and friendship across oceans. As part of its maritime journey, the training ship has docked in Las Palmas, Spain.
This stop in the Canary Islands is significant as it marks the first visit by an Indian naval vessel to this archipelago. It serves as a strategic pause before the ship embarks on its ambitious transatlantic journey. INS Sudarshini is a three-masted naval barque. During its time in Spain, the commanding officer will engage in discussions with Spanish naval officials. To strengthen public relations, the ship will also be open to the local Spanish community and Indian expatriates.
This tour highlights the growing maritime cooperation and engagement between the Indian Navy and the Spanish Navy. Since departing from Kochi in January 2026, INS Sudarshini has spread the message of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam while visiting ports in Oman, Egypt, Malta, France, and Morocco. The ship is on a nearly 10-month-long journey, set to visit a total of 18 foreign ports across 13 countries. It will undertake an extensive transatlantic voyage.
Additionally, the ship plans to participate in the ‘Sail 250’ commemorative events at various ports in the United States, marking the 250th Independence Day celebrations. Before arriving in Spain, INS Sudarshini successfully completed its port visit in Casablanca, Morocco.
This journey has been a significant step in strengthening the India-Morocco maritime partnership as part of the ongoing ‘Lokayan 26’ deployment. Notably, the training ship departed from the naval base in Kochi on January 20.
