Kochi, December 6 – IndiGo cancelled over 200 flights on Saturday, disrupting travel plans of hundreds of passengers in Kerala, including patients and Sabarimala pilgrims.
According to local media reports, at least 12 flights were cancelled at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport and Cochin International Airport on Saturday due to nationwide disruptions.
Reports indicated that around nine flights were cancelled in Thiruvananthapuram, including international flights, while three flights were cancelled in Kochi. Several passengers complained about poor treatment from IndiGo officials and said refunds would take at least two days, adding to their troubles.
Margaret, a heart patient from Kochi, remained stranded at Kochi airport for over 17 hours. She said on Saturday that the airline has not yet responded to her request for information about the cancellation of her US-bound flight.
She was scheduled to travel from Kochi to the US on Friday. Her British Airways flight to the US was scheduled from Mumbai on Friday night, and IndiGo was the connecting flight arranged by British Airways.
Margaret explained that British Airways can make alternative arrangements only when IndiGo informs them about the cancellation. She said the system was showing delay, not cancellation, preventing British Airways from making other arrangements. IndiGo officials informed her about the cancellation this morning and said British Airways would contact her for next steps. She added that she has not received any updates about her connecting and US flights from the airline.
A passenger at Thiruvananthapuram airport said they were informed about the cancellation only after reaching the airport. The passenger said, “I was travelling to Chandigarh via Mumbai. The airline informed me about the cancellation only after I reached the airport.”
A 75-year-old passenger at Thiruvananthapuram airport said IndiGo officials told him his flight was cancelled and asked him to take a refund. The passenger also said that officials should not behave this way with passengers during such difficult times.
On Saturday, IndiGo reportedly cancelled over 200 flights, further deepening the air travel crisis as thousands of passengers remained stranded at airports across the country waiting for their flights.
This disruption comes after IndiGo cancelled over 1,000 flights in recent days, which had already disrupted travel schedules nationwide.
Considering the increasing pressure on domestic travel, Indian Railways announced temporary measures including adding extra coaches on certain routes to ease passenger movement during this difficult period.
