New Delhi, October 1 (Daily Kiran) : India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection saw a significant increase in September, rising by 14.7% year-on-year to surpass ₹2 lakh crore, according to government data released on October 1.
The gross GST revenue from domestic activities rose by 10.1% to approximately ₹1.38 lakh crore. Meanwhile, GST collected on imports surged by 26% to ₹65,525 crore during the same period.
However, there was a slight decline in GST refunds, which fell by about 3% to ₹27,001 crore in September. After accounting for refunds, the net GST collection increased by 18.1% year-on-year, reaching ₹1.76 lakh crore.
For the first half of the financial year 2026-27 (April-September), the net GST collection rose by 11.6% to ₹12.46 lakh crore. During this timeframe, the gross GST collection exceeded ₹10.66 lakh crore, reflecting a 10.4% annual increase.
Additionally, a meeting of the GST Council is scheduled for October 7, where major changes to GST rates are not expected. Instead, the focus will likely be on procedural reforms and the implementation of recent rate adjustments.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has indicated that the upcoming meeting will prioritize procedural improvements under the “GST 2.0” framework, including rules related to e-invoicing and input tax credits. The council is expected to review the implementation of changes made to GST rates over the past year, addressing operational challenges rather than instituting broad rate cuts.
