New Delhi, April 2: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced the launch of an AI and computational thinking curriculum for students in grades 3 to 8 on Wednesday. The event was also attended by Union Minister of State Jayant Chaudhary.
This initiative marks a significant step towards systematically integrating artificial intelligence education into the school curriculum from the start of the academic year.
Developed by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) and implemented through schools under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), this curriculum aligns with the vision of the National Education Policy 2020. It aims to foster early development in digital skills and innovation-oriented education.
During a media interaction, Minister Pradhan emphasized the Indian government’s commitment to providing world-class, cutting-edge knowledge to school children. He reiterated the government’s intention to achieve two primary goals by 2026-27: “AI in Education” and “AI for Education.” To meet these objectives, CBSE has introduced a comprehensive curriculum for students in grades 3 to 8 through an expert academic committee.
“Our ultimate goal is to make India a global AI super-hub. However, we believe that without focusing on preparing the new generation, we cannot make a significant impact on the global stage,” he stated.
The Education Minister highlighted that the computational thinking curriculum for grades 3 to 8 is a revolutionary step towards future-ready education. This initiative formally introduces systematic AI education into the school system on a large scale. With organized modules, detailed handbooks for teachers, and robust assessment frameworks for students, this program ensures an early and structured introduction to emerging technologies, laying a strong foundation for tomorrow’s learners.
As India continues to establish its leadership in technology-based computing on the global stage, this curriculum will empower students to meaningfully engage with and shape their digital future.
