Indian Stock Market Opens Flat with Buying in Auto and Defense Stocks

Mumbai, July 22: The Indian stock market opened flat on Wednesday. The Sensex was down by 85.16 points or 0.11 percent, standing at 77,384.95, while the Nifty fell by 37.25 points or 0.15 percent, reaching 24,150.45.

The indices showed mixed trading activity. Nifty Auto, Nifty India Defense, Nifty Energy, Nifty Metal, Nifty Consumption, and Nifty FMCG were in the green. Conversely, Nifty Pharma, Nifty Healthcare, Nifty IT, Nifty PSU Bank, Nifty Services, Nifty Infra, Nifty Private Bank, Nifty Financial Services, Nifty Oil and Gas, and Nifty Media were in the red.

In early trading, mid-cap stocks also experienced slight declines similar to large-cap shares. The Nifty Midcap 100 index was down by 71 points or 0.11 percent, at 62,915. However, the Nifty Smallcap 100 index fell by 70 points or 0.37 percent, reaching 19,361.

Among the top gainers in the Sensex pack were Maruti Suzuki, Eternal, Titan, HUL, and Trent. On the other hand, Indigo, Axis Bank, Tech Mahindra, SBI, Sun Pharma, Infosys, Kotak Mahindra Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Bajaj Finserv, TCS, NTPC, BEL, HCL Tech, and UltraTech Cement were among the top losers.

Experts noted that ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Iran, along with rising Brent crude prices, are exerting pressure on the market despite positive news from other fronts. The initial quarterly results from the automobile sector have been impressive, and management’s comments are encouraging, with good export performance as well. The recent decline in major banking stocks seems to be coming to an end, indicating value in this sector.

They further mentioned that favorable news regarding dollar inflows from FCNR deposits is expected to keep the rupee stable. This inflow has now surpassed $20 billion, with potential for further acceleration. A market dip may present opportunities to buy fundamentally strong stocks, suggesting a positive outlook for the broader market in the near future.

Most Asian markets are trading positively. Tokyo, Shanghai, Seoul, and Jakarta are in the green, while Bangkok and Hong Kong are in the red. The U.S. stock market closed in the green on Tuesday.
