
Dhaka, February 17: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla met with Bangladesh’s new Prime Minister, Tarique Rahman, and extended an invitation for him to visit India. Birla arrived in Dhaka to attend the swearing-in ceremony earlier today.
After their meeting, Birla shared on the social media platform X, “I just concluded a constructive meeting with the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. I delivered a personal letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, conveying his best wishes to PM Rahman and inviting him to visit India at the earliest. I extended heartfelt congratulations on behalf of the people of India and reaffirmed our commitment to deepening the enduring partnership between our two neighboring countries.”
In a previous post, Birla asserted that India is fully prepared to support Bangladesh in its efforts to build a democratic, progressive, and inclusive nation.
Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to India, Riaz Hamidullah, also commented on X, stating, “After the swearing-in ceremony, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. PM Rahman acknowledged the greetings from India and PM Narendra Modi.”
He further noted, “The Honorable Speaker conveyed best wishes from India and extended an invitation to visit. Both leaders expressed hope to work together for the welfare of the people of Bangladesh and India and to advance a people-centered partnership.” Earlier today, Tarique Rahman, Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), took the oath as Bangladesh’s 11th Prime Minister following a significant victory in the 13th parliamentary elections.
Following his oath, other cabinet members were sworn in. The BNP’s 50-member cabinet includes 25 ministers and 24 state ministers. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla represented the Indian government at the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected government in Dhaka.
An official statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) remarked, “The Speaker’s participation in this important ceremony reflects the deep and enduring friendship between the people of India and Bangladesh, showcasing India’s steadfast commitment to the democratic values that bind our two nations.”
It further stated, “As neighbors connected by shared history, culture, and mutual respect, India welcomes the newly elected government in Bangladesh under Tarique Rahman, whose vision and values have garnered significant support from the people.”
