New Delhi, June 12: The Indian sports community is mourning the loss of renowned shooter Jaspal Rana, who passed away at the age of 49. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh expressed their condolences following his death.
Prime Minister Modi took to social media platform X, stating, “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Jaspal Rana. His departure is a significant loss for Indian sports. He brought honor to our nation through his exceptional achievements in shooting. As a mentor, his contributions were equally remarkable. He dedicated himself to training and guiding young athletes. His outstanding performance, discipline, and unwavering commitment to the sport earned him great respect. In this moment of sorrow, my thoughts are with his family, friends, and the entire sports community. Om Shanti.”
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh also shared his grief on X, saying, “I am shocked and saddened by the sudden demise of internationally acclaimed shooter Jaspal Rana. He was not only an excellent athlete and coach but also a humble and kind-hearted individual. He played a significant role in popularizing shooting as a sport in India.”
He added, “Jaspal Rana brought glory to India by winning gold medals at the World Shooting Championships and the Asian Games. His passing is a tremendous loss for Indian sports. May God grant strength to his grieving family. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family and fans during this difficult time. Om Shanti.”
Kalikes Narayan Singh Dev, President of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), also expressed his sorrow over Rana’s death, stating, “This is a significant loss. He was not just a champion shooter but also an excellent mentor. He will be greatly missed.”
Jaspal Rana, a celebrated Indian shooting coach and former Asian Games gold medalist, was working as a high-performance coach for Indian pistol shooters. He had coached several athletes, including two-time Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker. Recently, he was hospitalized after feeling unwell while returning from the ISSF World Cup in Munich, Germany.
