Ahmedabad, August 31: The Director General of Police (DGP) (Crime) K.L.N. Rao announced on Sunday that modern sports facilities are being developed at the Gujarat Institute of Prisons and Correctional Administration (GIPCA) in Ahmedabad. This initiative aims to meet the training needs ahead of the upcoming Olympic and Commonwealth Games.
During the National Sports Day 2026 celebrations organized by the Prisons Department at GIPCA, Rao stated that the first phase of modernization is being carried out through the Police Housing Corporation. The upgraded facilities will include smart classrooms, a computer lab, and a library, along with other training infrastructure for officials and staff ranging from jail assistants to deputy superintendents.
Rao emphasized, “Sports are an excellent means to develop physical fitness, team spirit, and discipline.”
He mentioned that modern sports fields for various games are also being developed at GIPCA, keeping in mind the Olympic and Commonwealth Games scheduled to take place in Ahmedabad. These facilities will benefit the trainees enrolled at the institute.
This program was part of the nationwide celebrations for National Sports Day 2026, held from August 28 to 30 under the theme “Khelega Bharat, Jeetega Bharat” by the Sports Authority of India.
As part of the event, zone-wise kabaddi and tug-of-war competitions were organized for the officials and staff of the Prisons Department at GIPCA, chaired by Rao.
Rao encouraged trainees undergoing a nine-month basic training program to complete their training diligently and perform their duties with dedication. The event also recognized the performance of wrestlers from the Prisons Department at the DGP Cup 2026-27 Gujarat Police Wrestling Cluster competition held at the Nadiad Sports Complex.
A total of 22 teams from across Gujarat participated in the competition. The players from the Prisons Department won 14 medals (six gold, six silver, and two bronze) and secured the champion trophy for the tournament.
Rao congratulated the athletes for their outstanding performance. Meanwhile, the selection process for the best players from various jails and GIPCA for the upcoming Gujarat Police DGP Cup Kabaddi (Men) 2026-27 competition has been completed.
