Indian Railways Speeds Up 549 Trains, Saves Over an Hour in Travel Time

Indian Railways has announced a significant boost in train speeds under the 2026 timetable revision to improve punctuality and reduce travel time. A total of 549 trains have been accelerated, helping passengers save over an hour on certain routes.

According to the Ministry of Railways, the speed increase varies across trains: 376 trains have seen an improvement of 5 to 15 minutes, 105 trains have gained 16 to 30 minutes, 48 trains have been sped up by 31 to 59 minutes, and 20 trains now run faster by 60 minutes or more.

Regional Contributions to Speed Enhancement

South Western Railway has played a leading role in this initiative by improving the speeds of 66 trains by 5 to 15 minutes, 29 trains by 16 to 30 minutes, 12 trains by 31 to 59 minutes, and 10 trains by 60 minutes or more. Other zones have also contributed: Central Railway enhanced 13 trains by 5–15 minutes, 13 by 16–30 minutes, and 4 by 31–59 minutes. East Coast Railway increased speeds of 2 trains by 5–15 minutes and 1 train by 16–30 minutes. East Central Railway improved speeds for 7 trains by 5–15 minutes, 2 trains by 16–30 minutes, 2 trains by 31–59 minutes, and 1 train by 60 minutes or more.

East Railway accelerated 29 trains by 5–15 minutes and 3 trains by 16–30 minutes. North Central Railway improved 1 train by 5–15 minutes. Northeast Railway increased speed for 9 trains by 5–15 minutes and 3 trains by 16–30 minutes. Northeast Frontier Railway made speed improvements for 20 trains by 5–15 minutes, 10 trains by 16–30 minutes, 3 trains by 31–59 minutes, and 3 trains by 60 minutes or more. North Railway enhanced 22 trains by 5–15 minutes and 2 trains by 16–30 minutes. North Western Railway improved speeds for 67 trains by 5–15 minutes, 14 trains by 16–30 minutes, 7 trains by 31–59 minutes, and 1 train by over 60 minutes.

South East Central Railway accelerated 9 trains by 5–15 minutes and 2 trains by 16–30 minutes. Southern Railway increased speeds of 53 trains by 5–15 minutes, 10 trains by 16–30 minutes, 9 trains by 31–59 minutes, and 3 trains by 60 minutes or more. West Central Railway improved 25 trains by 5–15 minutes, 1 train by 16–30 minutes, and 1 train by 31–59 minutes. Western Railway enhanced 53 trains by 5–15 minutes, 15 trains by 16–30 minutes, 10 trains by 31–59 minutes, and 2 trains by 60 minutes or more.
