Indian Merchant Navy Officer Stranded in Hormuz Strait, Family Seeks Urgent Help

Jaipur, April 23: A merchant navy officer from Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, is currently stranded on a ship in the Hormuz Strait, raising concerns for his family.

On Thursday, legislator Jaydeep Bihani wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, urging immediate diplomatic intervention. In a video message, he revealed that an Indian ship has been detained, with Sanjay Mahar serving as the second officer.

Bihani appealed to Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Chief Minister Sharma to take swift action for the safe release of Sanjay Mahar and all crew members aboard the vessel.

Reports indicate that 38-year-old Sanjay Mahar is part of the crew on a container ship allegedly stopped by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The Liberia-flagged vessel, named ‘Epaminondas’, was en route to Mundra Port in Gujarat. According to family members, Sanjay left for Dubai about 20 days ago and boarded the ship four days before the incident. The ship was expected to reach Mundra by Thursday but was halted midway due to restrictions in the Hormuz Strait.

Sanjay’s brother, Subhash Mahar, shared that approximately 30 hours ago, as the ship attempted to move forward, it was surrounded by Iranian forces. Reports of gunfire have heightened the family’s anxiety. Following the incident, crew members moved to secure parts of the ship.

The vessel has around 21 crew members, including nationals from India, the Philippines, Ukraine, and Sri Lanka. Before losing contact, Sanjay sent a video showing the crew appearing worried.

Now, with internet services cut off, the family has completely lost contact, intensifying their concerns. They have appealed to the central government for immediate measures to ensure the safety and return of all crew members.
