Colombo, August 23: The second Test match of the series between India and Sri Lanka is underway at the Sinhalese Sports Club Stadium in Colombo. Indian batsman Devdutt Padikkal has delivered an outstanding performance, scoring his second consecutive Test century.
Padikkal faced 168 balls to complete his second Test century. Previously, he had also scored a century in the first Test played in Galle, where he made an impressive 167 runs, leading India to a 165-run victory over Sri Lanka. In this match, he scored a remarkable 117 runs off 193 balls, hitting 12 boundaries.
Since the 2018-19 season, no Indian batsman has scored centuries in consecutive Test matches on foreign soil. Padikkal’s achievement mirrors that of Cheteshwar Pujara, who accomplished this feat during the Border-Gavaskar Test series in 2018-19, scoring 106 in Melbourne and 193 in Sydney.
After KL Rahul was dismissed for 18 runs, Padikkal showed great form right from the start. He partnered with Yashasvi Jaiswal to add 29 runs for the second wicket. Following that, he formed a significant 120-run partnership for the third wicket with captain Shubman Gill, who scored 50 runs before getting out.
The Indian team, batting first after winning the toss, did not have a great start, with KL Rahul returning to the pavilion early. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was looking good, was clean bowled by Asitha Fernando at a score of 45. The Indian team made one change to their playing eleven for this Test, with Saransh Jain making his debut in place of Kuldeep Yadav, who is suffering from an infection.
