Indian Government Extends Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singhs Tenure by One Year

The Indian government has extended Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singhs tenure by one year, recognizing his contributions to defense reforms.

New Delhi, October 24 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian government has decided to extend the term of Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh by one year, pushing it to October 31, 2027. This decision was made just a week before the end of his initially scheduled two-year term on October 31.

Singh, an IAS officer from the Kerala cadre of the 1989 batch, has been recognized for his efforts to promote ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) in the defense sector. His initiatives to reform the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) have played a pivotal role in making India more self-sufficient in defense capabilities.

Known for his calm demeanor and resolute decision-making, Singh has encouraged the Ministry of Defence and DRDO to expedite decision-making processes and open traditional missile production to the private sector.

He took over as the 40th Defense Secretary on November 1, 2024, succeeding Giridhar Aramane. When appointed in August 2024, his term was extended beyond the typical retirement age, allowing him to serve until the end of October this year.

Since May 31, Singh has also held additional responsibilities as the Secretary of the Department of Defence Research and Development and the Chairman of DRDO. This dual role was assigned to him following the completion of Samir V. Kamat’s term, who had served as the head of DRDO since August 25, 2022. The arrangement will remain until a regular head is appointed or further notice is given.

In the current government, Singh’s predecessors, Ajay Kumar and Giridhar Aramane, retired upon reaching the end of their terms. R.K. Mathur and G. Mohan Kumar extended their service beyond the standard retirement age, completing their two-year terms. Sanjay Mitra received a three-month extension after his two-year tenure in 2019. Singh’s extended term marks a notable precedent, as no one has held the position for as long as he will.
