New Delhi, October 13 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian government has officially approved the appointment of two additional judges to the Madras High Court. This decision came after a recommendation from the Supreme Court collegium, which met on May 18.
Arjun Ram Meghwal, the Minister of Law and Justice, announced the decision on social media platform X. He stated that using the powers granted by the Constitution of India, and after consulting with the Chief Justice of India, President appointed Dharmalingam Lingeshwaran and Balathandayutham Karthikeyan as additional judges.
The Supreme Court collegium had previously approved the proposal to appoint these judicial officers during its meeting. A statement released on May 19 confirmed that the collegium endorsed the appointment of Lingeshwaran and Karthikeyan, along with four others, as judges of the Madras High Court, based on a proposal from November 4, 2025.
The collegium, which includes the Chief Justice of India and the most senior judges of the Supreme Court, is responsible for recommending appointments and transfers within the higher judiciary. The process of appointing judges in the higher judiciary is a collaborative effort involving both the executive and judiciary, requiring consultations and approvals from various constitutional authorities at both state and central levels.
Only those individuals whose names are recommended by the Supreme Court collegium are appointed as judges of the High Court.
