Eight Former UDP Legislators Confirm Shift to BJP in Meghalaya
Eight legislators from Meghalaya confirm their shift from UDP to BJP, signaling a significant political shift ahead of the 2028 elections.

Shillong, October 13 (Daily Kiran) : Eight former legislators from the United Democratic Party (UDP) in Meghalaya have officially reaffirmed their decision to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). On October 13, they met with Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma in Shillong to confirm their transition.
Led by Lakhmen Rymbui, the legislators had previously attempted to meet with the Speaker, but he was out of town at that time. Rymbui stated that the purpose of their visit was to personally reiterate their decision to join the BJP, which they had announced on September 23 in New Delhi.
After the meeting, Rymbui emphasized the importance of their presence, stating, “Today’s meeting is to confirm what we communicated earlier when the Speaker was unavailable.” Alongside the eight legislators was BJP member Sanbor Shullai, marking a significant shift in Meghalaya’s political landscape, where regional parties have traditionally played a crucial role.
The departure of these legislators from one of Meghalaya’s major regional parties, the UDP, is expected to impact the state’s political dynamics ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections. This shift comes as political parties in Meghalaya gear up for the upcoming electoral battle, potentially affecting organizational strategies and support mobilization across the state.
The BJP aims to strengthen its foothold in the northeastern region, and the inclusion of these eight legislators could enhance its presence in Meghalaya. Meanwhile, the UDP faces the challenge of managing its position after losing key members to a national party. The meeting with the Speaker represents another formal step in the legislators’ transition, and discussions regarding the political implications of this shift are likely to continue as parties prepare for the 2028 elections.
