
Ahmedabad, March 9: The Indian cricket team has clinched the T20 World Cup 2026 title. In the final match held at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad, India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs.
This victory marks India’s second consecutive T20 World Cup win and their third overall. With this achievement, India becomes the first team in the world to win three T20 World Cups. They are also the first team to win the T20 World Cup on home soil. Following this historic success, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has showered the Indian team with prize money.
India received a reward of $3 million from the ICC for becoming world champions, which is approximately ₹27.48 crores in Indian currency.
The runners-up, New Zealand, were awarded $1.6 million (around ₹14.65 crores).
Both South Africa and England, who were eliminated in the semifinals, received $790,000 each (approximately ₹7.24 crores).
Teams that reached the Super 8 stage were granted $380,000 (about ₹3.48 crores).
For teams that did not advance past the group stage, a total of $250,000 (around ₹2.29 crores) was allocated.
The ICC had set a total budget of ₹120 crores for the entire tournament.
In the final match, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and opted to bowl first. The Indian team, batting first, scored 255 runs for the loss of 5 wickets, thanks to significant contributions from Sanju Samson, who scored 89 runs off 46 balls with 8 sixes and 5 fours; Abhishek Sharma, who made 52 runs off 21 balls with 3 sixes and 6 fours; Ishan Kishan, who added 54 runs off 25 balls with 4 fours and 4 sixes; and Shivam Dube, who scored 26 runs off 8 balls with 2 sixes and 3 fours.
Chasing a target of 256 runs, New Zealand was bowled out for 159 runs in 19 overs. Tim Seifert scored 52 runs off 26 balls, and Mitchell Santner contributed 43 runs off 35 balls. Daryl Mitchell managed 17 runs, while the remaining batsmen failed to reach double digits.
For India, Jasprit Bumrah was outstanding, taking 4 wickets for just 15 runs in 4 overs. Axar Patel claimed 3 wickets for 27 runs in 3 overs. Hardik Pandya, Varun Chakravarthy, and Abhishek Sharma each took 1 wicket.
Sanju Samson, with his performances including an unbeaten 97 against the West Indies and 89 runs in the semifinal against England, was named Player of the Series. Jasprit Bumrah was awarded Player of the Match.
