Okha, August 22: A significant chapter in the proud history of the Indian Coast Guard concluded as the Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Meera Ben was formally decommissioned at Okha Port with full military honors. This traditional and dignified ceremony marked the ship’s final farewell.
The event was presided over by Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Manjeet Singh Gill, Commander of Coast Guard District Headquarters No. 15, Okha. It was attended by civilian and military dignitaries, the ship’s commanding officer, Commander Thinkal Tharakan, crew members, and representatives from various units stationed in Okha.
ICGS Meera Ben was named in honor of Meera Ben, a devoted disciple of Mahatma Gandhi and a prominent figure in the freedom movement. Inspired by Gandhian ideals, Meera Ben dedicated her life to serving the nation. Mahatma Gandhi affectionately named her ‘Meera’ after the great saint-poetess Meerabai, recognizing her dedication and spirit of service.
The ceremony commenced with an impressive guard of honor parade. At sunset, the Indian Coast Guard flag was lowered for the last time from the ship, symbolizing the formal end of its glorious service. Following this, the decommissioning pennant was also brought down. This emotional moment marked the conclusion of the ship’s active journey, which had safeguarded the nation’s maritime borders for over two decades.
Constructed by Goa Shipyard Limited, ICGS Meera Ben was inducted into the Indian Coast Guard on July 25, 2006. It was part of the water-jet propelled Extra Fast Patrol Vessel series, known for its high speed and operational efficiency. During its service, the ship made significant contributions to maritime security, surveillance, search and rescue operations, and the protection of national maritime interests.
During the ceremony, Commanding Officer Commander (JG) Thinkal Tharakan presented his final decommissioning report to DIG Manjeet Singh Gill, officially marking the end of the ship’s active service.
In his address, DIG Manjeet Singh Gill reminisced about the remarkable services of ICGS Meera Ben, stating that the ship symbolized the capability, dedication, and duty of the Indian Coast Guard. He appreciated the contributions of all officers and sailors who served on the vessel, highlighting that Meera Ben played an exemplary role in safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests for two decades.
The farewell of ICGS Meera Ben was not just an occasion for the decommissioning of a ship, but also a moment to honor the loyalty and dedication of all the sailors and personnel who made this vessel a proud identity of the Indian Coast Guard.
