Lucknow, August 22: Uttar Pradesh‘s Water Resources Minister, Swatantra Dev Singh, provided an update on the current flood situation in the state. He stated that this year’s flooding is not as severe as last year’s. While water levels in several rivers have risen, no river is currently flowing above the danger mark. The government and administration are closely monitoring the situation and are fully prepared to address any emergencies in flood-affected areas.
The minister noted that the rainfall levels this year have not reached the intensity seen last year. Regions such as Nepal, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh have also not experienced significant rainfall that would impact Uttar Pradesh’s rivers and reservoirs. He mentioned that many dams and reservoirs in the state are not filled to the levels they were at this time last year.
Swatantra Dev Singh highlighted that areas including Sonbhadra, Mirzapur, Lalitpur, Banda, and Mahoba are under constant surveillance concerning dams, reservoirs, and water structures. These water bodies are essential for irrigation, industry, and drinking water needs, making water level monitoring crucial.
Typically, many rivers in the state are at flood stage by this time, leading to widespread inundation. However, the situation remains under control this year. Although water levels have increased in some districts and areas, no rivers have reached the danger mark yet.
The minister specifically mentioned the Ghaghara River, noting that it is currently flowing at a higher level due to rainfall in the upper regions. Nevertheless, the administration is working diligently to manage the situation. He assured that monitoring of the dams is ongoing 24/7, with officials and staff present on-site to address any severe situations or erosion issues promptly.
He also pointed out that during periods of low water, erosion problems can arise. Special monitoring instructions have been issued for these areas to prevent any damage to villages, poor families, and farmers.
Swatantra Dev Singh confirmed that preparations are in place to evacuate residents from flood-prone villages to safer locations if necessary. The administration is already on alert regarding villages that may be affected by flooding. Should water levels rise rapidly or erosion occur, arrangements will be made to relocate people to safety.
He claimed that flood prevention projects have been completed on schedule. In areas where flood protection projects are finished, there is currently no significant threat. However, the administration continues to monitor regions lacking these projects or facing erosion issues.
