Lucknow, August 22: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has reassured residents that there is no shortage of sugar in the state, urging citizens not to panic. Currently, the sugar mills in the state hold a stock of 1.79 million quintals of sugar. In the past two months (June and July), these mills have sold 2.35 million quintals of sugar.
CM Yogi has directed that sugar mills should be operational from October 15 if necessary. During a review meeting, he stated that cooperative sugar mills have 236,000 quintals, corporation mills hold 52,800 quintals, and private mills have 1.5 million quintals, totaling 1.79 million quintals available in the state. Additionally, most of the sugar sold in June and July is still available in the open market.
The Chief Minister urged the public to be cautious of those spreading misinformation about sugar shortages. He instructed administrative officials to take strict action against hoarding and misinformation. Following directives from the Government of India, no dealer is allowed to stock sugar for more than 30 days, and they cannot hold more than 400 tons at a time. Bulk consumers (those consuming 10 metric tons per month) are also restricted to a stock of no more than 15 days. Sugar mills must not hold sold sugar in their warehouses for more than seven days.
He directed all district magistrates to verify the physical stock of all registered sugar mills, wholesalers, and retailers, ensuring a report on the actual stock situation. Strict action will be taken against those holding stock beyond the prescribed limits or engaging in hoarding. Continuous monitoring of sugar availability and pricing in the districts is essential, and any artificial shortages or price hikes should be reported to the government immediately.
The meeting revealed that for the 2026-27 crushing season, an estimated 2.814 million hectares of sugarcane will be cultivated, potentially producing 9 million tons of sugar. The estimated monthly sugar consumption in Uttar Pradesh is around 400,000 tons. In the 2025-26 crushing season, over ₹32,554 crore was paid to 4.8 million farmers.
