Indian Ambassador Highlights Development Initiatives for Tamil Community in Sri Lanka

Colombo, June 15: Indian Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, shared insights on ongoing initiatives by the Indian government during a recent event. These initiatives encompass housing, scholarships, and grant assistance.

In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, he expressed his joy in attending the 20th anniversary celebration of the Up-Country Education Development Society (UEDS).

Ambassador Jha elaborated on various projects aimed at improving the lives of estate workers. He mentioned the recent increase in scholarships under the CEEDWIT program, grants for enhancing school infrastructure, the provision of equipment to schools, and teacher training programs in STEM subjects. Additionally, he noted the expanded eligibility for OCI cards for the fifth and sixth generations of Indian-origin Tamils (IOT).

He referred to the Indian-origin Tamil community as a “living bridge” between India and Sri Lanka. During the event, UEDS honored seven recipients of IOT achievements. The gathering was attended by several Sri Lankan ministers and officials, including Fisheries Minister Ramalingam and Deputy Plantation Minister Pradeep Sundaralingam.

On Sunday, the ambassador also participated in the ‘Largest Bharatanatyam Class’ in Colombo, which set a Guinness World Record.

He shared on ‘X’, “I was thrilled to be part of the ‘Largest Bharatanatyam Class’ in Colombo. Nearly 5,000 dancers from India and Sri Lanka came together to celebrate the beauty, grace, and grandeur of Bharatanatyam.”

Ambassador Jha emphasized that Bharatanatyam serves as a cultural connector between India and Sri Lanka, strengthening ties between the two nations. He also received the Guinness World Record certificate on behalf of the organizers and students, expressing his pride in this achievement.

He concluded with a post on ‘X’, stating, “I feel honored to receive the Guinness World Record certificate on behalf of the organizers and students. This is a remarkable testament to the strong cultural ties between India and Sri Lanka.”
